Many of you have expressed concerns after hearing about Amarillo’s high COVID-19 numbers in the news. These spikes are due in large part to the high numbers of local immigrants working in meatpacking plants, where social distancing is nearly impossible to maintain on cramped production lines, and where language barriers make it difficult to communicate.
Ryan was recently interviewed by journalists at BuzzFeed who published an article presenting an accurate picture of how two halves of the same city could have such drastically different experiences with the same pandemic. He was glad to share some of the nuances about communication, fears and stigmas, and to connect the journalists with local refugee leaders so they could speak for themselves.
