Celebrating a Local Artist

When we talk about empowering refugee communities, what we mean is that we want to identify their skills and passions, and then come alongside them to celebrate and encourage their success here. Jerry is the president of the Karen Community of Amarillo, and he’s also an incredible artist. Jerry works in a meatpacking plant to provide for his wonderful family, and he attends GED classes during his spare time so he can get his diploma. Yet he still finds time to create beautiful pieces like this one, which now decorates the walls of the Karen Community’s offices.
Jerry isn’t alone. There are many thousands of refugees and former refugees in this city with their own unique talents. Let’s work together to celebrate them and encourage them!
